The Fulcrum is failing, and demons are slipping into the mortal world, stalking the night. No one is safe. Especially not Sorrel. An orphan and an outcast, she’s spent her whole life in the safety of her small village, ostracized because of her mystical abilities. Desperate for survival—and maybe to find a place to belong—Fate has other plans for her.
Sorrel has been chosen. She’s cursed. To save her world, she must cross the Badlands to return the Queen’s crown, and convince the fearsome Queen to fight for their survival. But in order to survive the treacherous journey, Sorrel strikes a dangerous deal with Merc, a brooding, dark mercenary known for his unscrupulous ways.
The deal? A night in his bed, in exchange for safe passage. But the connection between them is more than either expected. As the two struggle to keep their passions and secrets in check, enemies lurk at every turn, and betrayal could be their ultimate undoing.
The Unboxing Experience
When I first laid eyes on the PR box for Crown of War and Shadow, I was absolutely blown away by how stunning everything was! The deluxe hardcover edition is truly a masterpiece—those sprayed edges? Gorgeous. The cover design captures all the dark, mystical vibes I adore, and I can already tell this is one of those books that’s going to look amazing on my shelf. 😍
But that was just the beginning! Inside the box, I was treated to a treasure trove of goodies that made me feel like I was stepping into the world of Kingdoms of the Compass myself.
First up: a beautifully detailed map of the Kingdoms. This will definitely come in handy as I follow Sorrel and Merc on their dangerous journey. J.R. Ward’s world-building has always been top-notch, and based on this, I can already tell this series will be no different. Every little detail in the packaging made me feel even more immersed in the universe she’s created.
And then the surprises just kept coming…
I also received a Merc-scented candle from @southernnovelscents, and let me just say—it’s incredible. The fragrance of crisp cedar, hardened steel, worn leather, and aged sandalwood is the perfect match for the brooding, enigmatic Merc. It’s rich, earthy, and full of danger—just like him. 💀🔥
To top it off, there were two stunning Moon bookmarks, engraved faux leather bookmarks from @bookishatelier. The craftsmanship is out of this world, and I’m already in love with these!🌙✨
Why I’m Excited to Read Crown of War and Shadow
This is the first book in J.R. Ward’s Kingdoms of the Compass series, and I’m so ready for it. I’ve been a huge fan of her Black Dagger Brotherhood Series, which completely reignited my love for reading, so it feels extra special to be diving into this new series. There’s something about Ward’s writing that pulls you in and makes you invest in the characters’ journeys, and I’m expecting nothing less from Crown of War and Shadow.
The romantasy genre has become one of my favorites, and Crown of War and Shadow promises all the things I love—magic, danger, slow-burn romance, and characters who feel real. I’m already excited to see where Sorrel and Merc’s journey takes them. I mean, who doesn’t love a dark mercenary with secrets and a touch her and die vibe?
Tropes I’m Already Obsessed With:
- Forced Proximity / Only One Bed: This trope never fails to deliver all the tension and chemistry. Sorrel and Merc are forced into close quarters, and I’m here for all the will-they-or-won’t-they moments!
- Chosen Mates: There’s something so epic about two characters being drawn together by fate, especially when their connection is complicated and messy.
- Dark Mercenary: A brooding, mysterious mercenary with hidden motivations? Yes, please! I’m already in love with Merc and his edge.
- Touch Her and 💀: I mean, what could be better than a hero who would die to protect his love? It’s the ultimate sign of devotion and I can’t wait to see it play out.
I’m so excited to dive into Crown of War and Shadow. The world-building, the characters, the tropes—all of it is setting up for what promises to be a gripping and passionate fantasy adventure. With demons, forbidden romance, dangerous journeys, and magical secrets, this book is everything I love about romantasy.
A huge thank you again to @jrwardauthor, @brambleromance, and @heyy_tanakalovesbooks for this amazing gifted PR box! I’ll be sure to update you all as soon as I start reading, but from what I’ve seen so far, I’m already hooked!
