Hello readers!
It’s that time again — the season of holiday lights, cozy blankets, and every reader suddenly remembering the goals they set back in January. If you’ve recently opened your Goodreads challenge only to whisper “uh-oh,” trust me, you’re not alone. The end of the year is the perfect mix of ambition and chaos, and today we’re diving into the books we still want to read, the new releases we’re excited for, and how our goals have survived (or not) since January.
The topic is
End-of-Year Reading Goals?
Prompts
What books do you want to read before the end of the year? Are there any new releases you’re still looking forward to? What goals did you set at the beginning of the year? Have you changed or added to those goals?
📘 What Books Do You Want to Read Before the End of the Year?
Every December, I tend to fall into two categories:
- Let me catch up on all the books I meant to read months ago, and
- Let me mood-read every cozy, romantic, seasonal book I can get my hands on.
This year, my list is an interesting mix. There are the I really should’ve read this already titles, and then there are the if I don’t read this before January, it will haunt me picks.
A few that are still on my list:
- That one big fantasy I’ve been putting off because it’s 700+ pages.
- The romances everyone recommended all year but I never got around to.
- A couple of backlist books from authors I discovered in 2025.
- A comfort reread because the end of the year always makes me nostalgic.
It’s ambitious… but honestly, isn’t that half the fun?
🎉 Are There Any New Releases You’re Still Looking Forward To?
Even though it’s late in the year, there are always a few final releases that sneak in and steal our attention. December releases can be gems — cozy romances, emotional contemporaries, holiday-themed stories.
There’s something extra exciting about squeezing in a new release just before the year ends. It almost feels like a bonus chapter for your reading year.
📅 What Goals Did You Set at the Beginning of the Year?
Ah yes… the January optimism.
Back then, most of us were setting bold goals like:
- “I’m going to read 100 books!”
- “I’m only buying books after I finish the ones I own.”
- “I’ll read more nonfiction this year.”
- “This is the year I finish all the series I started.”
Some of those goals may be thriving.
Some may have mysteriously disappeared sometime around March.
But actually reflecting on them is part of the fun — it shows how our reading habits evolve and what kind of year we’ve had as readers.
🔄 Have Your Goals Changed or Evolved?
For many of us, absolutely.
Maybe you lowered your reading challenge to avoid burnout.
Maybe you decided to focus less on quantity and more on enjoying what you read.
Maybe you unexpectedly fell into a romance era, a fantasy binge, or a cozy mystery obsession and your goals shifted to match your mood.
Reading goals aren’t meant to be rigid — they’re more like guideposts. It’s completely normal (and honestly healthy!) to adjust them based on what makes reading enjoyable for you.
Toward the end of the year, my goals usually become simpler and kinder:
- Read what makes me happy.
- Finish a few books I’ve been excited about.
- Go into January with a fresh TBR (or at least the illusion of one).
The end of the year is such a magical reading season. Whether you’re sprinting to finish your challenges or slowing down with cozy favorites, it’s the perfect time to reflect on what you loved reading — and what you want to carry into the new year.
Goals can change, expand, shrink, or completely transform — and that’s okay. What matters most is that your reading brings you joy.
💬 Let’s Talk!
- What are your end-of-year reading goals?
- Are there any books you’re determined to finish before December 31st?
- What new releases are you still excited about?
- Did your goals change during the year — and how do you feel about that?
I’d love to hear your answers in the comments!
