Hello! This is my first time writing an LTB topic! so, here I am, excited to write this week’s post.
Today’s topic is: What Causes Reading Slumps?
Prompts: There have been past LTB topics about ways to get out of reading slumps, but I was curious about why they happen in the first place.
Do you fall into reading slumps often?
When it comes to reading slumps, I’m a victim of them many times during the year. But it’s almost inevitable once every few months at the very least. For me, can last from a few days to a few weeks.
These days, I easily fall asleep when reading, or some novels don’t hold my interest and I’m just bored. I’m having a hard time choosing the perfect book!
What causes them?
A lot of reasons might contribute to reading slumps.
- feeling exhausted or overwhelmed as a result of reading too much, too soon.
- dullness or disengagement with the topic matter can cause a loss of interest in what’s being read.
- everyday life has suddenly become so hectic that I don’t have the time or energy to read a book.
- Sticking to the same genre for too many books in a row, or trying to read too many books in a row,
- some of the books I appreciate the most induce the deepest reading slumps since nothing else seems to live up to them.
- External causes such as stress or depression can also contribute to a reading slump, which is why it’s important to take a break and get some rest if you’re experiencing one, as well as attempt to pinpoint the core cause to avoid it from happening again in the future.
Are there patterns you notice when you tend to read fewer books?
When you read fewer books, you may see changes. It might be due to changes in your routine or priorities, such as having less free time or choosing to dedicate more time to a new hobby. But It might also be due to a lack of interest in the books you’ve been reading or a lack of enthusiasm to start new ones.
Evaluating the causes of a decline in reading might help find potential remedies, such as making more time for reading or exploring new genres or topics that interest you.
What do you do to get out of a reading slump?
Actually, not much. I either reread a book, switch to another book, or skip this one.
My other go-to strategy is to spend a few days reading manga or Wattpad fiction. I enjoy reading them since they are ‘light’ and simple to read and rarely take more than half an hour. Reducing my social media and TV time also helps, as does moving my reading format.
If everything else fails, the only option is to stop reading, wait it out, and do something utterly unrelated to literature for a bit.
